I wanted to write about how much love and support Rotary is bringing to the areas of Italy devastated by the recent earthquake. But my words fail me, so I have to first write from the heart about what I have seen.

I feel as if death has entered me. My lungs inhale the dust of the earth. My feet walk amid debris. My hands touch stone that suddenly gave way, smashing hopes and dreams.

I trudge through streets where, a few days earlier, joyful children were walking with their grandparents, spending time during their summer vacation in the town where their parents grew up before moving on to start a family elsewhere.

Geraniums which once brought joy now are a sad reminder of a happy home that is no more. Outside, near the rubble-strewn lawn, is a crushed car, parked by the driver who returned home a few hours before the earthquake.

The faces of the people reflect pain and their skin bears the marks of devastation. Eyes roam about looking for something to bring peace of mind, but our thoughts are weighed down by those who are no longer here.

In the small village of Saletta, a family’s mailbox which used to hold letters from loved ones remains attached to a gate that now serves as a fragile barrier against trespassers. But you can still see inside the courtyard where among the debris sits a crushed car and two knotted sheets hanging from a window, sheets that helped two people escape to safety.

I want to thank my fellow Rotarians from around the world who, with their support, are helping us get through this terrible moment.

We are men and women of action and with Rotary, every mission is possible, even the most desperate.

We can go beyond what seems impossible because we are serving humanity. We have always been doing it and we will keep doing it forever.

Here, where the earth is still shaking, we have to think about the future. We can use our expertise and professional skills to help rebuild the future for those in need.  We will be able to help the affected communities start over by giving them not only hope in this moment, but also the certainty that we will leave no one behind. We will take them by the hand and accompany them into the future.

We are present and taking action in the local community because even more than being members of a charitable organization, we are reflecting the true character of Rotarians: helping with our hands and heart.

Riflessioni dai luoghi del terremoto che ha colpito l’Italia

Avrei voluto scrivere di quanto amore il Rotary sta portando in queste zone d’Italia devastate dal terremoto, ma mi mancano le parole, e allora lascio correre la penna e vado dove mi porta il cuore.

La morte mi è entrata dentro. I miei polmoni hanno respirato polvere di terra. I miei piedi hanno camminato fra i detriti. Le mie mani hanno toccato quella pietra che improvvisamente si è mossa travolgendo sogni e speranze.

Ho camminato a stento dove qualche giorno prima correvano sorridenti i bambini accompagnati dai loro nonni, trascorrendo le loro vacanze estive nel paese dove erano cresciuti i loro genitori prima di trasferirsi altrove per farsi una famiglia.

I gerani fioriti, gioia di chi li coltivava, non addolciscono più la vista dei passanti e sono la traccia della vita davanti a una casa felice che non c’è più. Fuori, nel prato, fra un sasso e l’altro, un’auto schiacciata, parcheggiata da chi era tornato a casa qualche ora prima del terremoto.

I visi delle persone sono segnati dal dolore e sulla pelle è scolpita la devastazione. Gli occhi vagano liberi in cerca di serenità mentale ma i pensieri restano lì, ancorati a chi non c’è più.

Una cassetta postale è rimasta attaccata al cancello divelto dal terremoto.

A Saletta, la cassetta dove il postino a volte portava le lettere dei figli è rimasta attaccata alla cancellata e ora è una fragile barriera che avvisa che oltre non si può andare. Ma consente allo sguardo di vedere il cortile dove, fra le macerie, ci sono un’auto schiacciata e due lenzuola annodate in tutta fretta che penzolano da una finestra dopo aver aiutato due persone a mettersi in salvo.

Voglio dire grazie agli amici Rotariani di tutto il mondo che con il loro sostegno ci aiutano in questo terribile momento. Siamo uomini e donne del fare e con il Rotary ogni missione è possibile, anche la più disperata.

Sappiamo andare oltre l’impossibile perché siamo al servizio dell’Umanità, da sempre e per sempre.

Qui, dove ancora trema la terra, dobbiamo pensare al domani. Possiamo usare le nostre competenze e le nostre professionalità per aiutare a ricostruire il futuro di queste popolazioni perché siamo capaci di dar loro non solo la speranza in questo momento, ma la certezza che nessuno sarà lasciato solo domani. Prenderemo per mano chi ne ha bisogno e lo accompagneremo verso il futuro.

Resteremo presenti e impegnati sul territorio perché, piuttosto che come membri di una meritevole organizzazione di beneficenza, agiremo secondo la nostra vera natura di Rotariani: con le nostre mani e con il cuore.
