As I traveled in 2012 to Rotary clubs and projects, I saw the joy of being a Rotarian. I noticed that the deeper your involvement with Rotary, the more you can grow as a person. Furthermore, I believe that Rotary can mean something different to each Rotarian, and it’s a part of our journey to discover that meaning. My wish for 2013 is that Rotarians discover what this organization means to them, and then share it with others. These personal experiences are our Rotary moments. Here were some of my Rotary moments from the past few months.

Peace

At the end of November and early December, I went to the Berlin Rotary Global Peace Forum in Germany. Past RI President Luis Giay and I were impressed with the hard work the German Rotarians put into this sold-out event. We offer them our sincere thanks. If the next two peace forums – which are in Honolulu and Hiroshima — are anything like the one in Berlin, they too should be very successful. I’m looking forward to the Honolulu peace forum at the end of January.

In early December, my wife, Kyoko, and I went to Rome where we were honored to have an audience with a man of peace, Pope Benedict XVI. I presented him with a gift on behalf of Rotary International as well as stayed to hear him give a speech, which was translated into seven languages to a large crowd.

Polio

In Geneva, Switzerland, Dr. Margaret Chan, the director-general of the World Health Organization, asked me to thank Rotarians for our work in eradicating polio. I too thanked her for the support Rotary has received over the years from WHO in our shared mission to end polio. WHO, along with UNICEF, CDC, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are our polio eradication partners.

Then in Tokyo, I met with current and former representatives of Congress to personally thank them for their support of Rotary International and of their support of Rotary’s polio eradication efforts.

Celebrating and promoting Rotary

Celebrations in Rotary are important. They let people know that Rotary is a part of their community, and it helps us to rejoice in our work and our milestones. I had the privilege recently of attending the 60^th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Osaka North in Japan as well being in the Rose Parade in California. Both were important events.

In the Rose Parade on 1 January, I rode the Rotary float with Rotary Vice President Ken Schuppert. It was hard work waving to the many thousands of spectators at the parade, but I enjoyed their boisterous cheers! This was the biggest parade I have been in, and I also got to attend my first American football game. It’s much better to see it in person than to watch it on TV.

Also in early January, I went to the Rotary Club of Abbotsford, in British Columbia, Canada – via Skype! I think it’s important to meet as many Rotarians from around the world that I can, in what ever way is available.

Rotary moments come in many shapes and sizes, but each one is unforgettable. I wish you a joyous 2013 filled with many Rotary moments.

ロータリー国連デーと超我の奉仕について

2012年に各地のロータリー・クラブやプロジェクトを訪ねる中で、ロータリアンであることの喜びを再発見しました。ロータリーに打ち込めば打ち込むほど、人としても大きく成長します。ロータリーが持つ意味は人によってさまざまだと思いますが、誰もがその意味を探求する旅の途中にあるでしょう。2013年の私の願いは、ロータリーが自分にとって何を意味するかをそれぞれのロータリアンが見出し、その答えを人々と分かちあっていただくことです。この個人的な体験こそが、ロータリー・モーメント（心に残るロータリー体験）です。これまで数カ月間に私が経験したロータリー・モーメントをここでご紹介します。

平和

11月末から12月始めに、ドイツのベルリンで開催された「ロータリー世界平和フォーラム」に出席しました。フォーラムは満席となる大盛況で、同席していたルイス・ジアイ元RI会長と私は、ドイツのロータリアンが精力的にイベントの準備を進めてくださったことに心から感謝しました。今後ホノルルと広島で開催される平和フォーラムでも、これほどの行事を実現できれば、フォーラムは大成功を収めるでしょう。まずは1月下旬に開催されるホノルルでの平和フォーラムが楽しみです。

12月上旬、妻の京子とともに、ローマを訪れ、平和の象徴ともいえる法王ベネディクト16世に謁見する機会に恵まれました。国際ロータリーを代表して法王への贈り物を渡した後、スピーチを拝聴しました。スピーチは、大勢の聴衆に向けて7カ国語に通訳されました。

ポリオ

スイスのジュネーブでお目にかっかったマーガレット・チャンWHO事務局長からは、ポリオ撲滅活動における貢献に対して、ロータリアンにお礼を伝えてほしいと頼まれました。私も、ポリオ撲滅という共通の使命の下、WHOが数々の支援をロータリーに提供してくれたことに感謝の気持ちを伝えました。WHO、ユニセフ、米国疾病対策センター、ビル・アンド・メリンダ・ゲイツ財団は、ポリオ撲滅を目指す私たちの活動のパートナーです。

東京では、国会議員と元議員に会い、国際ロータリーへの支援とロータリーのポリオ撲滅活動に対する支援に感謝を述べました。

ロータリーを楽しみ、推進する

ロータリーで、祝い事は重要な要素です。こうした機会に、ロータリーが地元の一員であることを人々に知ってもらい、自分たちの活動や節目を改めて実感することができるからです。最近、私は大阪北ロータリークラブの創立60周年記念行事に出席し、また米国カリフォルニア州ではローズ・パレードに参加しました。どちらもとても大切な行事でした。

1月1日に行われたローズ・パレードでは、ケン・シュパートRI副会長と一緒にロータリーの山車に乗りました。何千人もの観客へ向けて手を振り続けるのは大変でしたが、にぎやかな歓声を受けて参加を楽しむことができました。私がこれまでに参加した中では一番大きなパレードでした。また、初めて生で観戦したフットボールは、テレビで見るよりもずっと臨場感がありました。

1月上旬には、カナダのアボッツフォード・ロータリー・クラブを訪問しました。これは、スカイプ（ビデオ通話）を通じての訪問です。利用可能なあらゆる手段を使って、世界中の多くのロータリアンと会うことが大切だと思います。

ロータリー・モーメントの内容は実にさまざまですが、その一つひとつが忘れがたいものです。2013年は、皆さまが多くのロータリー・モーメントを経験し、喜びにあふれた一年となることをお祈りしております。
