RI President Sakuji Tanaka receives a goat as a gift during his visit in Kenya.

While I was in Africa recently, I traveled through eight countries and nine cities, meeting people and projects along the way. What I saw amazed me.

For example, I met Rotarians who had an impressive ability to identify the needs of orphaned children. They were using grants from The Rotary Foundation to help support a dairy farm in Kenya.

I also enjoyed visiting a large water project in a Masai village, where water was being pumped with the help of gravity over hills to reach villages four kilometers away! Three districts in Japan and District 5340 (California, USA) support the project. It was gratifying to see this work in action.

The unexpected sometimes happens on trips. During the trip, I was given a goat after being made a Masai elder! In case you are wondering, I didn’t bring the goat back with me to my office at Rotary World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA. I didn’t think it was a good idea to bring it back to the United States in my luggage! The villagers promised to care for the goat in my absence.

田中作次RI会長：ヤギを贈呈されたケニアへの旅

私は最近、アフリカへの旅から帰国いたしましたが、8カ国・9都市を周り、現地で行われているロータリーの素晴らしいプロジェクトを視察することができました。

例えばケニアでは、孤児のニーズに応えるための活動を行っているロータリアンに出会いました。彼らはロータリー財団からの補助金を利用して、現地の酪農場を支援していました。

また、マサイ族の村における大規模な水のプロジェクトも視察しました。このプロジェクトは、日本の3つの地区と、第5340地区（米国）が協力して支援しているもので、丘の勾配と重力を利用して、4キロ離れた村に水を引くというものです。プロジェクトを直に見ることができ、大変嬉しく思いました。

旅行をすると、時に思いもかけない出来事に出くわすものです。ケニアを訪問した際、マサイ族の長老として認めていただき、何とヤギも贈呈していただきました。さすがに、ヤギをスーツケースに入れて、米国エバンストンの世界本部にある私のオフィスに持ち帰ることはできませんので、私がいない間は、村の人々が代わりにヤギを世話してくれることになりました。
