As a Rotary public image coordinator, I have the responsibility to do whatever I can to increase the public’s awareness of Rotary and what we stand for. The goal is of course to increase membership.
In Spain and Portugal, we have just under 8,000 Rotarians, and our resources are certainly limited. When we saw that Korean Rotarians were leading all countries in the number of photos uploaded to the World’s Biggest Commercial, we were inspired to action. We knew we had to come up with a strategy to increase our participation.
Our strategy in Spain was simple:
- Get young people involved! We first went to the universities to enlist young people in encouraging others to participate. Just two volunteers took more than 500 pictures in one morning.
- Ask permission from city officials to set up tables on the street corners to attract attention. We were granted a license at no cost for two months in the most popular areas in the city, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
- Fill the tables with volunteers, and End Polio Now materials.
- Invite journalists we have worked with in the past to cover the story. (And try bringing other Rotarians along as well!)
- Share our story and encourage others to do so as well.
The results of these campaigns have been outstanding. As of August, Spain ranks as the country with the most photos uploaded to the World’s Biggest Commercial at 9,031. Portugal is in second, thanks to their wonderful efforts. Together we have made more than 14,000 pictures, 45 percent of the total number of pictures uploaded to the World’s Biggest Commercial campaign. We are proud to have done our part in elevating awareness for polio eradication and helping save lives from polio.
