On 11 August, I had the honor of taking part in the Bud Billiken Parade in Chicago — the city where Rotary began. The parade and picnic, the oldest and largest African-American parade in the United States, celebrates children returning to school after summer break.

During the parade, the counsel general of Japan in Chicago, Yoshifumi Okamura, who is an honorary member of Rotary One in Chicago, rode in a convertible with me. I met Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., who I pinned with my Peace Through Service pins.

I was happy to see that many people were aware of Rotary and had a positive view of it. Spectators who saw my name on the vehicle were shouting “Mr. Tanaka, Mr. Tanaka!” It took waving both my hands to acknowledge all the well-wishers along the route.

Taking part in the parade was a great way to promote the importance of education, one of Rotary’s areas of focus, and get children excited about returning to school.

国際ロータリー会長：基本的教育を推進するバド・ビリケン・パレードに参加

8月11日、私はロータリー生誕の地、シカゴで行われたバド・ビリケン・パレードに参加する機会に恵まれました。アフリカ系アメリカ人が参加するこのパレードは米国で最も古く、最大規模であり、ここで、夏休みを終えて新学期を迎える子どもたちを応援します。

パレードでは、在シカゴ日本国総領事館の岡村善文総領事と一緒に行進用のオープンカーに乗車しました。岡村総領事は、ロータリー・ワン・ロータリー・クラブ（シカゴ）の名誉会員となっておられます。また、イリノイ州知事のパット・クイン氏やジェシー・ジャクソン牧師ともお会いすることができ、その場で「奉仕を通じて平和を」の襟ピンを付けさせていただきました。

多くの人がロータリーを知っており、ロータリーに対して良い印象を抱いているのを感じ取ることができて、とても嬉しく思いました。観客の中には、車に表示された私の名前を見て「ミスター・タナカ！ミスター・タナカ！」と声援を送ってくれる人もいました。私はオープンカーの走行中ずっと両手を振って、皆さんからの声援に応えて挨拶をしました。

パレードへの参加は、ロータリーの重点分野の一つである教育の重要性を強調し、新学期を前に子どもたちを一層元気づける素晴らしい機会となりました。
